Wedding photographer: How to hire the best photographer for your wedding

Your wedding day will be the best day of your life. Document it in the best pictures of your life. Pick the photographer for you.

If your wedding day is going to be the best day of your life, shouldn’t it be documented in the best pictures of your life? Photography is a very important part of your big day. You will certainly be spending lots of time in front of the cameraman so find the right one.

The search:
Of course if you have used a certain photographer before and liked the results, start there. If not, ask friends and family for recommendations. Other wedding professionals you’ve hired may have great suggestions, too. Perhaps your florist, whose style you know and like, would have a few suggestions. Of course, there is always the trusty phone book. Don’t overlook the Web as a search tool. If you find photographers online, they will probably have sample shots online for you to view. If the photos online don’t suit your style, you can narrow down your choices without having to pick up the phone or leave the house. You can probably also get an idea of the services and pricing on the photographer’s website so don’t be afraid to use it.

Interview:
When you have chosen a few photographers to interview before making the final selection, don’t show up clueless. Make a list of questions to ask. Have a certain style in mind. Do you want each shot to be posed or candid? Do you think you’ll want more than one photographer on location? When you leave the interview you need to be able to answer the question, “can this photographer provide us with what we are looking for?” Of course don’t forget to look at his portfolio while you are there. That is the most important thing you can do to determine if his style meets your expectations. If you like what you see ask to see some proof sheets. Proof sheets will show you every picture that was taken on one roll of film instead of just the best pictures from a photo shoot. If most of the pictures are bad, perhaps you should re-consider. Keep in mind though that even the best photographers sometimes only get three or four great shots per roll.
Don’t be afraid to ask about his expertise. If you want black and white pictures and most of his are done in color, keep looking. Does he work with digital cameras? Can he take pictures at night as well as he can in the daytime?
If the photographer you met with is the one that you want, be sure before signing a contract that he is the one you are paying for, not a different photographer who works for the same company.
Cost:
Find out what exactly it is that you are paying for? Does the photographer develop your film or is that an additional cost? How many hours does the lump sum pay for? Can you pay for more if necessary? What kind of package deals can you get? How long will it take to get your pictures back? Will you have to pay more to get them back quickly? Know all of the details of exactly what you are paying for before you pay or them. Don’t pay for anything you don’t want. At the same time, don’t be afraid to ask for more than they are offering as long as you can afford the additional cost.
The ideal photographer is out there, so don’t settle for less!
