Joyce Kleber, 72, spent the majority of her life focused on her career as a teacher at Greece Arcadia High School, and in recent years, caring for her sick mother. But all of that changed in January of this year when Frank Maslyn, 95, waltzed into her arms while she danced at Legacy Senior Living at Park Crescent in Greece.
“All of a sudden this man comes up to me and says ‘you don’t have to dance alone,’ and we danced perfectly” said Joyce. After the dance Joyce gave Frank her phone number, and both of them knew that something special was happening.
“I never felt so sure about anybody as I did him.”
Their first date consisted of going to an organ concert at the Rochester Auditorium Theatre and having dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. About six weeks after that, Frank popped the question and Joyce said yes.
About a month before the wedding, Frank packed up his belongings and left his apartment in Georgetown Park to move in with Joyce at her home in Hilton.
When Joyce first met Frank, she said she couldn’t tell that he’s in his nineties.
“He is not your typical 95-year-old man. I mean he drives, he golfs twice a week,” Joyce said.
Frank even participates in weekly Zumba classes.
“He’s really with it, he remembers things better than I do.”
Frank and Joyce were married on Saturday June 16 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Since Joyce was entering into her first marriage, they decided that they should have a real wedding.
“I had the gown, the veil, we had the church, and we had a reception at Lakeshore Country Club, and four hours of music,” she said.
Joyce insists that she had never felt she had to be married to be married; but rather was waiting for the love to go with it. Frank has been married twice before.
“If you were to tell me, six or seven months ago, that I'd be getting married, I'd say you're crazy,” says Joyce.
“I never expected this to happen. When you don’t look for it that’s when it happens.”
Although Frank defies his age by remaining actively involved with his church, volunteering and weekly Zumba classes, he warned Joyce that she might end up taking care of him.
“I'm aware that that day could possibly come,” she says, “but we're happy now and I consider myself blessed.”
Joyce says that she and Frank are thinking of honeymooning either off the coast of California or the Canadian Rockies.
