Popular Cheltenham wedding photographer John Cheesman dies, aged 72
Tributes have been paid to a popular Cheltenham wedding photographer who has died, aged 72.
John Cheesman passed away following a short illness.
The loving grandfather was the former owner of Cheesman’s Photography and Framing shop in Albion Street, Cheltenham.
His wife, Joan, said his love of taking pictures went back to his childhood.
She added: “He was very friendly and helpful to everyone and was well-known to lots of his customers.
“And he has always been very passionate about photography ever since he was a child.
“As a family business, we had our ups and downs but we all got very well together.
“He had been everywhere and we used to take our grandchildren on trips every year.
“He was a loyal and good husband, who was good to his children and loved his grandchildren.”
John died on May 18, two months after being diagnosed with cancer.
He led a healthy and active life but fell seriously ill soon after doctors had told him that he didn’t have long to live.
He was born in Liverpool and moved to Kent at the age of 10.
When he left school, he worked for BHS and Forrest Perkins.
But he always wanted to run his own business and, when the opportunity arose after a move to Cheltenham, he opened Cheesman’s Photography in Regent Street in 1970 before moving to Albion Street 16 years later.
His son, Paul, took on framing photographs.
His last photography job was in 2010 at the age of 70 although he endeavoured to help out at the store as long as he was fit and well.
Paul added: “My dad was very helpful when I joined the business 28 years ago.
“I was never as interested in photography as he was but it was his idea that start picture framing.
“If he didn’t teach me, I wouldn’t be able to continue the business he started. He will be missed”
A funeral will be held at Cheltenham Crematorium on Tuesday, June 4.
He leaves wife Joan, sons Paul and Mark, and grandchildren Amber and Ben.
